The Best Rainy Day Activities!

It is a rainy forecast in the GTA this Spring Break! But we've got you covered!

By Jessica Dennie April 11, 2021

Rainy weather gets a bad reputation. While yes, inclement conditions certainly ruin beach days and picnics and hikes, there are still plenty of cozy fun activities to do indoors!

HAVE A SPA DAY

A self-care day holed up in your apartment will leave you feeling all sorts of rejuvenated. Just slap on a hydrating face mask and let the pitter patter of the rain act as your own personal white noise machine. It's Spring Break, let the kids join in on the fun! Give each other a mani/pedi! Get the boys mixing up the perfect face mask!

HAVE AN INDOOR TREASURE HUNT

Kids in the house? Keep their rainy day lively with a treasure hunt. Make one set of clues for every player (try rhyming the clues for fun), with each clue leading to the next one and, finally, to the treasure. Seal them in envelopes marked with a clue number (i.e., 2/7, or “two of seven”); this will help the treasure hunters keep track. Whoever solves the clues first and finds the treasure—a small toy, an IOU for a movie, maybe a cache of coins (regular or chocolate)—is the winner. Or have your kids play as a team to solve the clues and uncover the treasure together.

SIGN UP FOR A COOKING CLASS

Doesn't matter if your skills are already Chopped-champion levels of gourmet, or if you barely know how to boil water. Cooking classes are all about making scrumptious food and then eating your concoction, and therefore they are the perfect invention for a rainy day!! You'll learn the recipe for something new and get to hang with a pro chef, virtually of course!

CREATE A FAMILY RECIPE BOOK

If you've got some keen little chefs on your hands and are wondering what to do on a rainy day, the perfect activity might just be to make a family recipe book. Here are the details:

What You Need

  • Unlined journal
  • Recipe cards (the more sauce-splattered, the better)
  • Wine or Champagne labels
  • Photos from family meals
  • Adhesive
  • Photo corners
  • Ruler
  • Shimmery alphabet stickers (available at crafts stores)
  • Ribbon

What to Do

  1. Color-copy all recipe cards, photos, and labels if you want to preserve the originals or make more than one gift book.
  2. Compile the memorabilia by time period, holiday, or any other theme that inspires you.
  3. Affix the items horizontally in the journal. Use photo corners for pictures and recipe cards and adhesive for labels and clippings.
  4. Stick a title on the front of the journal with alphabet stickers (using a ruler helps), and finish off with a ribbon.

FINALLY ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE

Consider pulling a Marie Kondo and tackling all of the organizing and cleaning tasks you've had on your list for forever. You could even make some money off this endeavour if you put together a bag of clothes to donate to Good Will or another charity!

CAMP INDOORS

While camping may not be your first thought when you think of things to do inside, who says tents have to stay outside? If you have a pop-up or small dome tent, it’s easy to set up camp for your kids indoors. If not, you can create tents by draping sheets over the couch. Make them comfy with airbeds, pillows, and sleeping bags, then follow through with an indoor picnic to be eaten “under canvas.”

HAVE A THEMED MOVIE MARATHON

Get the kids involved! Streaming a movie when the weather sucks is a classic option, so I suggest you kick it up a notch by choosing a theme. Watch the entire Dark Knight trilogy from the beginning to the end. Blake Lively's entire canon of work? Streaming it! Every Star Wars movie ever made? Heck, yes! Only flicks about LA, or Paris, or spring break. The options are endless—you just have to get creative.

GET BAKED

The wholesome kind. I'm talking cookies, brownies, cakes, maybe a loaf of banana bread or two. (and yeah, you can definitely freeze 'em for a—wait for it—rainy day.) Get competitive, break into teams and have a bake-off at home or virtually with friends!

GET YOUR SWEAT ON

Going for a run outside is certainly out of the question (unless you enjoy getting poured on) but you can still get your heart pumping at a fun gym class. If you were a member of a gym before the lock down they may be offering free online classes. If not, there are tons of paid and FREE virtual programs that you can try at home with the family or virtually with friends!

Don't just try a regular cardio class, learn the new TikTok dance craze! Do a fitness challenge and track your progress!

SPLURGE ON A MEAL AT A FANCY RESTAURANT

I'm sure there's at least one restaurant you can't stop Insta-stalking. Now's the time to finally make that Uber Eats purchase and get fancy! Set the mood with lighting, break out the good China and send the kids to bed! Or let them join in on the fun!
